on basca

The kingdom of basca is sadly at war with itself. It is separated into Northern and Southern Basca; the North is particularly in a state of unrest. Short for the magic sanctuary city of Oremis, the Church has tried to rout and exterminate witches as part of a political climb. Northern Basca, in short, in a mess — the legacy of many conquerers, wars and famine, the opening of a power vacuum and opportunistic clergy. The country has produced a very hardy, somewhat stoic people— but very loving, dutiful and loyal.

GOVERNMENT

On one hand, Basca is a patriarchal monarchy. Heirs are the first male child. On the other hand, the Church is trying to take over as an entity with a standing army and nobles at their beck and call, challenging the monarchy. Depending on where you are, it is more of a feudal system, or a Church-militant.

RELIGION

Bascans primarily worship three gods, sometimes known as the Aspects or Principalities, or simply, the Tría, the Three.

✧ Madrana (Mother) The Mother is often represented by the sun and fire, and acts as the hearth, the receiver, the protector. She also represents femininity, fertility and good health and luck in childbirth and rearing. The Madrana is merciful and forgiving.

✧ Patre (Father ) The Patre is often represented by the moon and water, acting as the giver, the masculine, the warrior. He supposedly grants good luck in battle and is also an arbiter and god of judgment, sorting souls into seven heavens or seven hells.

✧ Níñe (Child) The child represents innocence, awe, learning and renewal, potential, and all genders. The Níñe is also love, and light. They are often depicted as a single star or many scattered in the night sky, around the Patre.

Calista doesn’t particularly worship the Three, though she acknowledges them as important entities. Instead, she follows the Old Gods, gods of the deep woods, of petrichor and the animal, the primal, the sacred earth. She does somewhat worship the Madrana though, in the context of witchery and syncretism, usually.

GEOGRAPHY/CLIMATE

Basca is quite arid and hot, though the agreeable falls and winters make up for it. It is perennially sunny, with beautiful red steppes and buttes, incredible canyons of all colors. It is rocky and mountainous, with steep hills in many places.
